What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy brings a small number of people together with one or two trained clinicians to work through experiences that often feel isolating when carried alone.

Decades of clinical research show that group therapy produces outcomes comparable to individual treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma and relationship difficulties. It works differently rather than working better or worse than individual therapy.

Groups at Mindful Living Group are held with the same clinical care as any other service we offer, with attention to safety, pacing and what each person needs to participate fully.

How Group Therapy Supports Healing & Connection

The Evidence For Healing In Community

Decades of clinical research affirm what indigenous wisdom traditions have always known: we heal in relationship and community. Group therapy is a distinct and powerful modality for lasting transformation.

Comparable To Individual Therapy

Meta-analyses across thousands of group therapy participants show that group therapy produces outcomes equivalent to individual treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma and relational patterns. When enough foundational skills are developed the right group therapy can be highly valuable and effective.

Sense Of Belonging

Hearing other people share experiences that feel familiar can remind you that you are not the only one struggling. That sense of being understood and accepted can reduce isolation and help people feel more connected.

Interpersonal Learning

Group therapy gives you a safe place to practice being honest, speaking up, listening to others, accepting support and setting boundaries. You can try new ways of relating with people and receive feedback in the moment.

Helping Others Can Help You

Supporting another group member by listening, sharing encouragement or offering a thoughtful perspective can be rewarding for both of you. It can remind you that you have something valuable to offer, even while you are working through your own challenges.

Nervous System Coregulation

Polyvagal-informed research shows safe social environments regulate the autonomic nervous system. Being around people who feel safe and supportive can help your body settle over time.

Narrative & Identity Repair

Sharing your experiences in group therapy can help you see them in a new way. Over time, you may begin to understand yourself with more compassion and see possibilities beyond what has happened to you.
